Hand Scroll collects nothing, stores nothing about you, and sends nothing anywhere. Camera frames are analysed on your own computer and discarded immediately.
When you switch Hand Scroll on, it opens your webcam and looks for one hand, so it can tell whether your thumb and index finger are pinched together and which way your hand is moving. Each frame is analysed locally, in the browser, by a bundled copy of Google's MediaPipe Hands model, and is then discarded. Frames are never recorded, never written to disk, and never uploaded. The extension makes no network requests at all — the model and its runtime ship inside the extension package, so it works with no internet connection.
The camera runs only while the extension is switched on. Switching it off releases the camera immediately, and your computer's camera indicator light shows you whenever it is active.
None. Hand Scroll does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any data. There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no remote logging, no accounts, and no advertising. The developer receives no information about you or your browsing.
Two things, both in Chrome's local extension storage on your own machine, and neither leaves it:
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Your settings | Sensitivity, pinch strictness, invert direction, momentum, and whether tracking is on. |
| A short diagnostic log | The last 60 status lines (such as "camera open", "state: grab"), shown in the extension's own Diagnostics panel to help troubleshoot. It contains no page content, URLs, or personal data, and you can clear it at any time. |
Uninstalling the extension removes both.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Camera | To see your hand gesture. Requested through Chrome's standard camera prompt; you can revoke it at any time. |
Access to websites (<all_urls>) | Scrolling a page means running a tiny scroll instruction in that page. Because the extension is meant to scroll whatever page you are reading, this access cannot be limited to a fixed list of sites. It is used only to scroll: the extension never reads page content, form data, or your browsing history. |
scripting | The mechanism that delivers that scroll instruction to the page. |
storage | To remember your settings between sessions. |
offscreen | To run the hand tracking in a hidden page, so you don't need a camera window open on screen. |
contextMenus | To add the "Camera preview & settings" item when you right-click the toolbar icon. |
Hand Scroll is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, of any age.
If the extension ever starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the date above will change.
